ALARA - As Low As Reasonably Achievable

Keeping each individual Radiological Worker’s and Member of the Public’s exposure As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) is the objective of the Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC. This is accomplished by ensuring that radiation exposures to its workers and releases of radioactivity to the environment are maintained below regulatory limits and deliberate efforts are taken to further reduce exposures and releases. It is an approach to radiation protection to manage and control exposures to the work force and to the general public to levels as low as reasonable, taking into account social, technical, economic, practical and public policy consideration. An important feature of the ALARA concept at SRS is its integration into all activities involving radioactive materials.
The radiation exposures and frequency of contamination's of personnel have continuously improved. Our plan is to continue the best ALARA practices and technology at SRS by comparing our ALARA program to other successful radiological programs and by exploring new applications of proven ALARA technology. The Integrated Safety Solutions Center (formerly the ALARA Center) provides support in reducing exposures to radiological and non-radiological hazards to all SRS Site Workers.

A key component of the ALARA program is reducing occupational radiation exposure; however the overall goal is to reduce all hazards to the workers.
